Lighting Directors: ‘Creatives’ – leave us alone!

Calvi-1

11 February 2013

Leading Australian Lighting Designer Francesco Calvi today called on production and artist management to let lighting designers design.

Speaking on CXtra, Calvi said that he knew one director who had recently declined a commission because of external demands for particular lighting states and looks.

“Roger Foley touched on it” (in CX) “We’re turning up to shows, and people are telling us what they want.”

“It’s likle I hire you to light this show and say I want it red here and green there. Everybody is doing it!”

“There’s too many people who are being creative – the only time your opinion matters is if when it looks horrible. Say like the ARIA awards, where there’s so many people involved. An artist turns up, the record company, (everyone is) trying to style and recreate film clips. With video, people are getting into micro managing stupid little fine things. it’s very disheartening.”

Fellow leading lighting designer Ian Anderson agreed today. “We need to get the art of lighting back in our hands and hopefully the more we all talk (or moan) about it something might just twig in peoples heads.”
