Student Testimonials, April 2010
Name: Taylor McMullen, graduated from the Advanced Diploma of Live Production, Theatre and Events in 2009.

Where are you employed now? Southern Cross Media (Hobart)
What do you do? I'm the commercial producer for the two radio stations.
What do you like best about it? I’m working in an industry I enjoy - basically working one of my dreams jobs.
How do you use the skills you learned at college? I will be using the skills I learnt at college once I merge into Television which is part of my contract in radio.
What is the best thing about your time at college? Being from Hobart, meeting new people, learning about something I had passion in, friendly staff that were always willing to listen and help if they could and just having a fun time.
How has college helped you in your career thus far? I understand a lot more about the industry than I did before and am able to help out and give input in other areas of the company than my own.
Any other comments? Julius Events College was a "family" for me when I was in Sydney. There were the "siblings" you didn’t get along with and the ones you did. The "parents" that helped you with almost everything they could (including providing fun toys) and the cute little puppy that barked when I came in. You take it all as it comes and try make the most of the opportunities that are given to you otherwise you won’t learn anything. JEC was one of the best things I did =]

Name: David Fortescue graduated from the Advanced Diploma of Venues and Events in 2006
Where are you employed now? Acer Arena Sydney
What do you do? I am Technical Coordinator. This job is split into two parts. Firstly I am in the office, taking care of administrative requirements of my department. Writing to do lists and planning event logistics, booking crews, drawing maps, doing inductions and taking care of OH&S Requirements. I also work on the floor, working with the technical team. This includes setting up physical elements such as staging, seating, draping, functions etc. I also work on occasion in a contracting capacity for event such as Good Vibrations Festival.
What do you like best about it? I love putting on shows. There is nothing that makes me happier than hearing 17,000 people scream for their favourite artist. There is such an amazing energy in the air when people are that excited. I also like the people I work with; no one does this type of work unless they love it, because it is very demanding and at times anti-social!
How do you use the skills you learned at college? I think the first thing I noticed at college was the unbelievable scope that is associated with putting on events. From the outside, it seems like a relatively easy undertaking but once you get involved you understand what is really required. While the whole teaching staff are amazing, Simone’s attention to detail and dedication to showing us what was involved in an event from the ground up has proven invaluable.
What is the best thing about your time at college? I think for me it was the excitement of working with like minded people and working towards something I really wanted in life.
How has college helped you in your career thus far? In addition to the various subjects you study, one of the best things that the college provides you is contacts. I started working for free for a Sydney Production manager (I harassed him non-stop for two weeks to get in), from there I got a job for a production company and then my job at Acer. I can attribute my position now to that original contact. The college provides you the support needed to start off in the industry. I also keep in contact with a few of the people I attended college with and have worked with them in the industry.
Any other comments? There are few training institutions out there that offer this type of education. More and more the entertainment industry is becoming a very professional place. As a result, the benchmark for those wanting to work in the industry is being set very high and any assistance you can get in developing yourself as a professional should be sought. All the trainers at Julius Events College are fantastic, but I would have to say that Andy sits as one of my best teachers of all time and Simone’s passion for passing on her knowledge is invaluable to anyone who sits in a room with her.

Name: Alyce Kelly, graduated from the Advanced Diploma of Live Production, Theatre and Events in 2009.

Where are you employed now? MediaHub.
What do you do? I work as a trainee in Broadcast television as a presentation co-ordinator. I monitor what is going to air.
What do you like best about it? The place is like Star Trek crossed with an Outside Broadcast Van. The people are amazing!
How do you use the skills you learned at college? I use all my awesome vision skills!
I also use my time management skills too, definitely. Once you’re out in the real world everything you learnt at college makes so much more sense.
What is the best thing about your time at college? It has a great atmosphere and I met great people there. My favourite was definitely when we used to get the OB van in. And Productions of course as I was always the entertainment!
How has college helped you in your career thus far? Yes. I'm in the broadcast industry finally! If it weren't for college and Jimmy's knowledge on vision, I would have no interest in TV at all!
Any other comments? I miss college everyday! Waking up knowing I was going to JEC was great. I wanted to go everyday, never was a day where I said "I don't want to go to college today". Pretty sure you can't get a Jimmy and Andy anywhere else teaching you! Best teachers. I also miss college coffee and the jukebox!

Name: Josh Green graduated from the Advanced Diploma of Venues and Events in 2007. Pictured at Pearl Jam setup in Sydney. Where are you employed now? Event Personnel Group. What do you do? Festival & outdoor site management. I’m currently the Operation’s Manager of Event Personnel Group, a labour division we own. What do you like best about it? When I’m standing behind main stage, lights drop out, phone’s start flashing 20,000 50,000 or 80,000 people (depending on the venue) shout & scream as the main act begin the set. I live for the Goosebumps & anxious moments of delivering large scale events. How do you use the skills you learned at college? At college, I developed a dedication for delivering quality on time under pressure. The same goes when events roll back to back, you’ve got no choice the show must go on. What is the best thing about your time at college? Observing Andy & Simone’s teaching styles & techniques. For example: Control of classroom antics, explanation of topics, in-depth understanding & knowledge of specified fields. Their experience & personal mentoring was key to my development. How has college helped you in your career thus far? I volunteered across Sydney every weekend, looking for a way into the industry, without the course & being around other eager students I would never have achieved my goals and living my dream.
“Surround yourself around people with similar goals, you will get results”.
Any other comments? Julius was the foundation of my career, it could be yours.

Student Testimonials, April 2008
A lot of private colleges I have been to spend a lot of time teaching you things that allow them to be able to ‘tick the boxes’. It’s rarely ever that a course is designed and taught for what you need! Julius Events College has the ability to teach you whatever it is that you came to learn. Whether you are a beginner or a pro, you will always get something that can really further your knowledge in an area that you want! – Joaquin Loyzaga, Castle Hill, NSW.
The courses I have done have been a great mix of practical and theory – so now I know what to do, but also why I am doing it! – Carolyn Mattick, Petersham, NSW.
Well rounded, teaches more than one area of technical production. Instructors have lots of industry experience which is helpful because they know all the problems that happen, and point out how to avoid them. – Felix Abrahams, Dulwich Hill NSW.
The enthusiasm given by the trainers. The effectiveness of the course in fitting my needs and future career prospects. The trainers experience and knowledge towards the subjects being taught. – Jeremy Fox, Griffith, NSW
The course was laid back and not boring, but still very informing and relevant to my job and the training I required. – Erik Renno, Griffith, NSW
There was freedom to explore different aspects of the mixing console at our discretion. Trainers were excellent to get along with, and answered any questions we had at any time. Never too busy. – Mick Jeffery, Blayney, NSW.
The teachers are very friendly. The atmosphere of the college is really suitable for proper training. All the equipment is available for study. Trainers are really helpful. I love the barn, it is big and well structured. – Kaustav Sen Barat, Elizabeth Bay, NSW.
The college has good equipment and facilities. The training was good and I was able to learn, keep focus and concentrate, - Liam Clifford, Kogarah, NSW.
Classes have been of good size – 10 or 12 per session, allows everyone to be involved in the practical. The trainers are experienced and have a great amount of knowledge. The facility is also good, a decent sized room to allow for mock setups and rigging from the roof. – David Wasik, Zetland, NSW.
An enjoyable place to attend and learn. Very approachable instructor who you can ask questions about things not covered. The student lounge provides a place to meet and talk to other students with the same interests. – Brett Prentis, Port Augusta, SA.
Great combination of theory and practice session, opportunity to learn to work on modern equipment. Great atmosphere, very helpful tutors, always ready to help you. – Miroslav Sour, Wolli Creek, NSW.
I loved it. Basic Lighting – Don Jones was a great teacher and I learned a lot and had fun. Basic sound was really good. I got to do FOH mix, I went into the studio and learned some really cool tricks. Julius Events College is great – great teachers, and a fun environment. I learned so much. – John Nichols, Kensington, NSW
College is small enough to be very effective. It’s great to be able to learn from someone who has 30+ years of industry experience. Classes are a good size (not large), making the experience what it should be. – Evan Mynard, Corryong, Vic.
The class isn’t crowded and everyone seems to get the attention they need to understand fully what’s being taught and not fall behind. – Shane Johnston, Glenbrook, NSW.
